Alex Bruce insists that it is a “big, big year” for Tottenham wing-back Ryan Sessegnon as coaches look to promote Dennis Cirkin to the first-team.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Premier League defender admits the 19-year-old has a lot of pressure to nail down a place under Jose Mourinho next season.
As revealed by Football Insider, 18-year-old left-back Cirkin has been earmarked for a first-team role next season although club coaches are convinced Sessegnon will be a world-beater in 2020-21.
It is understood the coaches feel the youngster can save the club from having to sign a new senior left-back to compete with Sessegnon and Ben Davies for a place in defence.
With the homegrown gem set to bring added competition next season, Bruce believes the pressure is mounting on the former Fulham starlet’s shoulders.
Asked if Cirkin could threaten the senior duo, Bruce told Football Insider: “They’re two very, very good players. I think Sessegnon, it’s a big season for him.
“Ben Davies is a proven Premier League left-back and I think Sessegnon had huge potential when he was at Fulham so it’s going to be a big year for him to go and make that left-back spot his own if Danny Rose moves on, which it looks like it will do.
“It’s a big, big year for him.”
Sessegnon has managed to play just 12 times for Spurs since making the move from Fulham across London last summer.
His one and only goal for the Lilywhites came in the 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich back in December.
