‘Huge’ Rangers claim made as controversial John Lundstram footage analysed – McLeish

Alex McLeish has insisted referee Slavko Vincic was a “breath of fresh air” in Wednesday’s Europa league final between Rangers and Eintracht Frankfurt.

The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, heralded the 42-year-old for not making himself the centre of attention.

As seen in BT Sports’ coverage of Wednesday’s clash (18 May), John Lundstram controversially escaped a booking for a high boot on Sebastian Rode in the opening five minutes.

James Tavernier was among a number of players fortunate to get away without bookings for cynical fouls throughout the game.

Joe Aribo and Scott Wright were the only players to be shown yellow by Vincic.

McLeish praised the Slovenian official for his lenient display in Seville.

Asked what he made of the referee’s performance, McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “I thought he was a breath of fresh air, to be honest with you.

“Every little tug, foul or endangerment, I think he got it right. He wanted to keep all the players on the pitch.

“In a massive final like that, you don’t want to see players getting sent off and giving a huge advantage to the other team. Yeah, some players should have got yellows but didn’t get anything.

“But then we’d argue about red cards and things like that.

“I think he was right. I thought he was there not to be noticed and he did a great job.”

Rangers

Rangers succumbed to a penalty shot-out defeat in Seville after the game finished 1-1.

Aaron Ramsey was the only player to miss a spot-kick.
