Hutton delivers Rangers claim as controversial Malik Tillman footage re-analysed

Alan Hutton has insisted VAR should have overturned Malik Tillman’s penalty for Rangers against Partick Thistle on Saturday (12 February).

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers right-back said Partick were “unlucky” to concede the penalty.

As shown on As shown on Viaplay Sports (12 February), Stuart Bannigan pulled back Tillman’s arm and he went to ground inside the box.

Referee David Munro pointed to the spot immediately and a VAR check affirmed the onfield decision.

The Light Blues went on to win the game 3-2 and knock the Championship side out of the Scottish Cup.

But Hutton insisted the penalty decision should have been overturned by the VAR official.

My first thoughts were that is was outside the box,” he told Football Insider.

I thought the initial contact was probably a yard outside.

When they get to the line there is a tug on his shoulder but if the referee is going to give the foul, which he did, I think it has to be from outside the box because that is where it took place.

I think Partick Thistle were unlucky to concede a penalty.

I understand it is a difficult situation but that was one of the grounds where VAR was so they should be able to have an easy look at it, see that it was outside the box and not a penalty.

Rangers

Ibrox and Parkhead were the only two of the 16 grounds that had VAR in use for the fifth round of the competition.
