Hutton issues ‘big’ Rangers claim after £6m development
Alan Hutton has claimed Rangers will be “happy” that Celtic have qualified for the Champions League.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender said the Light Blues are “exactly where they wanted to be” by achieving group stage football.
A reported by the Scottish Daily Express (23 August), the Hoops are set to earn up to £6million more of the coefficient money than their Glasgow rivals for reaching the group stage of the European competition.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team beat PSV Eindhoven 1-0 on Wednesday (24 August) to secure their place in the next round of the competition.
They have been drawn in a group with Liverpool, Napoli and Ajax in the next phase of the Champions League.
When asked if Rangers would feel hard done by as a result of the gap in earnings, Hutton told Football Insider: “I don’t know the exact in and outs of it so it’s difficult to say but I think Rangers will be focused mainly on themselves.
“Rangers had a fantastic run in Europe last season, getting to the final, that obviously brought in a lot of money for the football club.

“This was obviously the ultimate goal. From where they were ten years ago until now, this was the progression for them. To have a seat at the big table, be in the draw, is exactly where they wanted to be.
“Obviously a lot of money comes from getting to the group stages. I think Rangers will be happy that both teams are in the Champions League but mainly focusing on number one and looking after themselves.“
