Hutton issues emphatic Giorgios Giakoumakis verdict as controversial Celtic footage analysed
Alan Hutton has insisted the referee was right to disallow Celtic striker Giorgios Giakoumakis’ goal against St Johnstone.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Rangers right-back said he would have wanted the goal to have been ruled out if he was at St Johnstone defender.
As shown on Sportscene (8 October), Giakoumakis thought he had doubled the lead for the Celts but the flag went up for a marginal offside decision.
The Hoops went on to win the game 2-1 after a last-gasp winner from the 27-year-old in the final minute of stoppage time.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game (8 October), Ange Postecoglou said his side should have finished off the game “a lot earlier”.
Hutton insisted the officials made the right call.
“As a defender I would put my hand up for offside every time,” he told Football Insider.
“I think that is where they have tried to be better.
“I know VAR is not in Scotland at this moment in time. But if you are offside you are offside, it is as simple as that.
“It was minimal but you are still offside so I think that is why they try and make it as clear as possible.
“He was fractionally offside but that is the rules. It is very tight but it is offside.“

Celtic retained their place at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with the victory on Saturday (8 October).
They are two points clear of Glasgow rivals Rangers.
