Hutton lauds Billy Gilmour amid Liverpool transfer claim

Alan Hutton has heaped praise on new Brighton signing Billy Gilmour amid suggestions the midfielder could join Liverpool in the future.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa right-back claimed a move to the Amex Stadium suits the 21-year-old “down to the ground”.

On 2 September, the Blues confirmed that the midfielder has joined Brighton on a permanent transfer.

The Scotland international had been out of favour at Stamford Bridge, and spent the 2021-22 season on loan with Norwich.

Gilmour was on the bench for Brighton’s 5-2 win over Leicester City on Sunday (4 September).

He was subbed on in place of Moises Caicedo to see out the final minute of injury time.

As quoted by talkSPORT (6 September), ex-Chelsea player Pat Nevin said he “wouldn’t be surprised” if Gilmour ended up at Liverpool or Man City in years to come.

When asked if a permanent move was the right choice for Gilmour, Hutton told Football Insider: “I think only time will tell.

There’s no doubt that he’s a really good football player.

Chelsea

The Norwich thing didn’t work for me I think it was always going to be difficult there, especially when they were fighting relegation, that’s where they were always going to be. So it was a difficult move for somebody to go in who’s a ball playing football to kind of fit into that way of football.

Going to Brighton I think will suit him down to the ground. I think Graham Potter plays lovely football and he’ll just transition into that no problem because he’s an intelligent football so I think it’s a good move for him.
