Hutton reveals ‘big’ Rangers worry as ‘Celtic are looking’ amid Hagi exit update

Rangers must “be careful” not to sell too many assets with automatic Champions League qualification up for grabs this season, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Gers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Ibrox club will have one eye on transfer business at Old Firm rivals Celtic in January.

According to Turkish outlet En Son Haber last Friday (17 December), Rangers are “preparing to sell Hagi for a serious figure”.

The Gers’ summer outlay was restricted to just over £2million amid worries about the club’s sustainability.

Hutton insisted all eyes will be on the Scottish Premiership title, with this season’s winners gaining automatic qualification to the Champions League group stage.

“The Champions League will be the biggest factor in any transfer decisions,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“The money that will bring in will be the biggest draw. Rangers will have to be careful. They won’t want to sell too many assets with Celtic looking to bring in a few in January.

“Both clubs will have eyes on the Champions League and building a squad capable of competing at that level. They’re not quite there yet, so they won’t want to be selling too many players.

“But again, if a fee comes in that Rangers see as acceptable – then they will accept it. With the likes of Hagi, they have got players who can come in and do a job – Wright, for example, can fill that void.”

Rangers are six points clear of rivals Celtic atop the Scottish Premiership after 19 games.

The two sides meet on 2 January.
