Hutton issues ‘shocking’ Marc Cucurella verdict after what he’s just seen at Chelsea
Alan Hutton is “still shocked” Chelsea spent £60million on Marc Cucurella.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa full-back said Thomas Tuchel is unlikely to start both Ben Chilwell and Cucurella together this season.
Cucurella started the Blues’ 2-1 win over West Ham on Saturday (3 September).
He was replaced by Chilwell for the final 20 minutes of the game at Stamford Bridge.
The England international made a huge impact from the bench, contributing a goal and an assist.
On 5 August, Chelsea confirmed the signing of Cucurella from Brighton on a six-year deal.
As revealed by Sky Sports (6 August), the deal is said to be worth in excess of £60m.
When asked if Thomas Tuchel could play both Chilwell and Cucurella together this season, Hutton told Football Insider: “I don’t think so.
“I think they’ll move to a three at the back, with [Wesley] Fofana, [Thiago] Silva, [Kalidou] Koulibaly whoever he decides to play. It’ll be two wing-backs, Reece James on one side and it’s either Chilwell or Cucurella on the other.
“I’m still shocked that they spent £60m on him. I think Chilwell is one of the best in the league when he’s fit and ready. It’s only a matter of time.

“Of course they’re going to push each other. If he was not fit, or up to speed, I thought they would maybe bring in a backup but spending £60m on a player he’s coming in to play.
“It’s a strange dynamic there so it will be interesting to see how it works out. But for me it’s going to be one or the other.“
