Rangers TV pundit surprised by Gerrard after Ibrox attacker claim

Alan Hutton has insisted the Rangers strikers “should be up to speed” after Steven Gerrard questioned their sharpness this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Gers defender admitted repeating last season’s success in front of goal would be tough but that the forwards should not still need to find their feet this term.

As quoted by the Glasgow Times, Gerrard insisted he does not think his strikers are lacking in confidence despite their profligacy this season.

Instead, he claimed they need to be an “extra yard sharper” after the 1-1 draw with Hearts.

Of the centre-forward options at Ibrox, Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe and Fashion Sakala have all made 10 or more appearances.

As such, Hutton admitted he was surprised to hear Gerrard talking about the trio’s sharpness.

Asked if the Rangers stars should be up to speed, the Rangers TV pundit told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “They should be, there’s no doubting that.

“The amount of opportunities Rangers create, it’s there for everybody to see. They should be up to speed now, we’re in October, we’ve had a lot of game time.

“Part of me thinks that we’re judging them also off last season and how well they played. The amount of goals they scored last season, their bar is set that high. That’s what we’re judging them against.

“It’s difficult to replicate last season, to go again. It can be hard. Everybody’s trying to shoot you down, you’re the champions.

“You have to take that on board and be fully focused on the job at hand.”

Roofe is the Gers’ top scorer this season with six goals.

Morelos has scored five, while no other player has netted more than twice.

In other news, pundit makes “unbelievable” claim about Gerrard quitting Rangers for Newcastle United.
