Hutton tips ‘excellent’ Celtic youngster for first-team breakthrough after big development

Celtic ace Adam Montgomery could break into the first-team next season if he shines during his six-month loan spell.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Rangers and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton hailed the 21-year-old as “excellent” and is keen to see him get regular senior football once again.

The Hoops confirmed Montgomery’s loan move to Motherwell, the fourth in his career, on 15 January.

The left-back was sent to League One Fleetwood Town at the start of the season but was recalled after he managed just six appearances in all competitions.

He was a regular while on loan at St Johnstone last season having made 21 starts in the league, with the majority of his outings coming as a left midfielder.

Hutton suggested that if he can get his season back on track at Fir Park, he could be in line for more regular action next season as Celtic are thin at left-back.

“It’s a great move for him,” he told Football Insider.

“I like him as a player and I think he’s been excellent when we’ve seen him get game time.

“But at this moment in time, he’s not going to play, so it’s the ideal opportunity to go out to another team.

“He needs that exposure and to play every week and to become a better footballer.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen with him in the future as he plays in an area where Celtic are looking to bring someone in.

“If he can go out and show Brendan Rodgers what he’s capable of, he could get into the first team more regularly.

“It’s a big step for him.”
