‘I love this club’ – James Maddison and Brennan Johnson respond excitedly after Tottenham deal agreed

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero shared a heartfelt message that sparked a huge reaction from teammates after a confirmed deal.

Romero has been a key figure in Tottenham’s back line since his arrival in 2021, but last season proved difficult as a string of injuries disrupted his rhythm and halted his momentum.

In recent months, his future had been the subject of speculation, with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid both showing interest in Romero. However, Spurs stood firm on their £60 million valuation, and no serious bids materialised.

The picture has since become far clearer in recent weeks. Romero was named Tottenham captain for the 2025/26 season, a sign of his importance to Thomas Frank’s plans going forward.

Now, following another announcement, his message was met with widespread celebration among both teammates and supporters, underlining just how valued he has become at the club.

Cristian Romero signs new Tottenham deal as teammates react

Tottenham confirmed that Romero has signed a new contract at the club, committing his future in north London until 2029.

The Argentine defender shared a short but heartfelt message with supporters following the announcement, writing: “I’m here to stay. Spurs is my family. I love the fans. I love this club.”

His words were warmly received by teammates as James Maddison reacted with: “Buzzin! Best centre half in world” while new signing Dominic Solanke added: “Capitano”.

Other players, including Brennan Johnson, Radu Dragusin and Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez, also showed their support by liking Romero’s post.

Despite featuring just 18 times in the Premier League last season due to injury setbacks, the defender reminded fans of his quality with Romero’s dominant display against Manchester United in the Europa League final, ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought.

His previous deal was due to run until 2027, and with strong interest from Atletico and Real Madrid, some expected an exit to be on the horizon. Instead, the 27-year-old has committed long term to the Lilywhites.

While Tottenham were able to secure one of their star defenders to a new deal, another player looks set to move on before the end of the window.

Former Spurs scout Mick Brown revealed to Football Insider that Manor Solomon is “certain” to leave Tottenham this summer.

The 26-year-old does not feature in Frank’s plans for the 2025/26 season and while Leeds have been linked with an interest in bringing Solomon back after his previous loan spell, they are yet to approach Tottenham over a deal.
