Ian Wright delivers verdict on Leeds promotion chances

By Amir Mir

Ian Wright has stated that he is “hoping” Leeds can earn promotion to the Premier League this season.

The former Arsenal striker explained that he wants the Yorkshire club to make a return to the top flight after a 13-year absence.

The Whites are currently managed by Englishmen Garry Monk who has guided them to promotion form for the majority of this campaign.

Despite their defeat to Huddersfield on Sunday afternoon, Monk’s side still sit comfortably in the top six.

BBC pundit Wright backed the promotion chasers to continue their good run and make a long-awaited return to the promise land.

“I’m really hoping that Leeds can do it this season,” Wright told BBC Radio Five Live. “Not to the detriment of Huddersfield, Newcastle or Brighton. But, there’s just something about Leeds, I just want them back.”

Leeds are currently in fifth place on 54 points from their 30 games, with 16 matches left in the season.

They are seven points behind the automatic places and eight points ahead of seventh-placed Norwich.

Former Swansea manager Monk took charge of the Elland Road club in the summer and he has since guided them to 17 wins from their 30 league games.

Over the course of the season, they have picked up some impressive wins against the likes of Norwich, Aston Villa and third-placed Reading.

They have not been beaten at home since November when current league leaders Newcastle recorded a 2-0 win.

Monk’s side can continue that run against Welsh outfit Cardiff next Saturday, followed by a midweek encounter against league strugglers Bristol City.

In other Leeds news, Ian Wright was critical of Garry Monk’s actions during the defeat against Huddersfield.
