Ianis Hagi and Todd Cantwell react to Cyriel Dessers’ ‘big’ Rangers message

Cyriel Dessers caught the attention of past and present Rangers stars on social media after a frustrating campaign at Ibrox.

The 30-year-old striker has often been used as a scapegoat during his time in Scotland, but with another 35 goal contributions across all competitions this season, there is no hiding from his talent.

While the Nigerian international missed a whole host of chances throughout the campaign, he rounded out his 2024/25 season with the opening goal in the 2-2 draw against Hibernian on Saturday, 17 May.

Of course, the game was shrouded in controversy after the Gers were denied a clear goal due to no goalline technology, and Nico Raskin could now be sanctioned due to his post-match actions.

The result was virtually meaningless, however, with their Old Firm rivals Celtic winning the Scottish Premiership title by a landslide 17 points in another disappointing season for the Light Blues.

Taking to Instagram (19 May), Dessers wrote: “Scottish Premiership Top Scorer 2024-25. Not the big trophy we all wanted, but a wee reward for never giving up…”

Nico Raskin replied: “Never give up. The mentality,” with a ‘100’ emoji, with likes from Ianis Hagi, Mohamed Diomande, Robin Propper, and controversial Blackburn figure Todd Cantwell.

Rangers squad to be unrecognisable after summer rebuild

Football Insider verdict

With 49ers Enterprises expected to be in charge ahead of the 2025/26 campaign kicking off, there could be a multitude of changes made to those competing on the pitch.

However, the first change is likely to come in the dugout because, while Barry Ferguson would have been hoping to remain Rangers manager, few have been convinced by his temporary reign.

The Gers did manage to reach the Europa League quarter-finals, many would believe against all odds, only to crash out of the competition to a very talented Athletic Bilbao side.

Attention must turn towards the summer transfer window now, and Dessers has long been linked with an exit, even during his first campaign in Scotland after failing to win over the fans.

Football Insider understands that Leeds United are well-placed to sign Raskin after gaining promotion to the Premier League, and Hamza Igamane is expected to leave for big money, which could help rebuild the squad.
