Confirmed: Former Rangers mainstay reveals desperation at continuing comeback v Celtic
Rangers striker Kenny Miller has admitted he would “relish” the chance to face Celtic at Hampden in next weekend’s Scottish Cup semi-final after making his first start since December in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Dundee.
The veteran striker, who was a mainstay in the first team prior to his injury layoff, opened the scoring for Graeme Murty’s side as they returned to second in the Scottish Premiership by brushing aside Neil McCann’s men.
With Josh Windass a doubt for Sunday’s trip to Hampden, Miller could be in line to start against the Hoops and the 38-year-old admits he’d be delighted to be involved.
“I’d relish the chance to go in against Celtic next week. It’s a massive game, a Cup semi-final and we want to win the trophy,” Miller said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“If selected, I’d be delighted to play because it will be a fantastic occasion. Hopefully I can keep the jersey now.”
Miller’s goal was his fifth of the season and helped the Gers to their first win in four games after defeats to Kilmarnock and Celtic as well as a draw at Motherwell, and is just his third league appearance in 15 matches.
The win over Dundee takes the Light Blues back into second-place in the Scottish Premiership on goal difference after Aberdeen slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Hearts.
Football Insider verdict:
Every player should want to play in games like next weekend’s Old Firm clash but with Miller’s contract – and career – nearing its end the veteran will be desperate to go out on a high against Brendan Rodgers’ side. Miller’s performance against Dundee will definitely have forced his way into Graeme Murty’s plans for the trip to Hampden but with Jason Cummings also available then it is far from certain that Miller will earn a start. Miller is no stranger to huge Old Firm games though so it could count in his favour when it comes to Murty making a decision over his starting XI.
