‘Idrissa Gueye unhappy with Everton contract offer’

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye is not satisfied with the club’s offer to extend his stay on Merseyside past this summer.

Senegalese midfielder Gueye is a cult hero among Toffees supporters – he initially played for the club between 2016 and 2019, then returned in 2022 after a stint in France with Paris Saint-Germain.

He has been a regular at the base of Everton‘s midfield over the last three seasons since his return, and the last campaign saw him make 37 league appearances under Sean Dyche and David Moyes, which represented his most in a single term for the club so far.

At 35-years-old, he is officially nearing the end of his time on Merseyside with his contract due to expire on 30 June, but Football Insider revealed back in April that Everton were planning to offer him a new deal, and the Toffees have since confirmed that they have offered him fresh terms.

Idrissa Gueye contract demands emerge as Everton plan squad overhaul

Moyes is set to overhaul his squad this summer in search of more progress next term, and former chief Keith Wyness recently revealed to Football Insider that he believes there will be as many as 10 new signings for Everton as they move into the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The likes of Abdoulaye Doucoure, Ashley Young and Asmir Begovic will all leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of this month, but Gueye has been offered the chance to stay, with The Times now revealing that his new terms include a one-year extension to his current contract.

The 35-year-old is yet to agree to the deal, however, and the same report claims that he is “‘”seeking a longer contract” as the two parties remain locked in negotiations, so it is currently unclear whether he will stay or go this summer.

Everton should give Gueye what he wants this summer

Football Insider verdict

Gueye remained a key man under Moyes over the last half-season, so it comes as little surprise to see Everton offer him a new contract, despite his age and the fact he will turn 36 in September.

He was named as the club’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season last month, following his standout performances throughout the campaign, so it is clear that he is not set to be easily replaceable this summer if he is allowed to leave.

Gueye’s Everton career statistics

Moyes has already secured the permanent addition of Charly Alcaraz to bolster his midfield options for the new season, but he focuses more on attacking in the middle of the park, and their depth would be lacking if Gueye was to depart soon.

James Garner would be their only recognised defensive midfielder if the Senegalese international departs, and so it does feel like a no-brainer to keep Gueye around this summer, and he should be handed a longer contract if that is what he wants, even if it takes him to retirement at 37 or 38-years-old.
