‘Ilkay Gundogan is leaving Man City as new signing heads in to replace him’

Man City are undergoing yet another transfer rebuild this summer with veteran playmaker Kevin De Bruyne already axed at the Etihad Stadium.

Kyle Walker, 35, is expected to follow and Pep Guardiola has confirmed Jack Grealish does not have a future at the club.

Now Ilkay Gundogan, 34, has emerged as a target for Turkish giants Galatasaray in recent days after a disappointing 2024-25 campaign for City.

The retired Germany international originally left Man City to join Barcelona on a free transfer in 2023, but returned just 12 months later.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has had his say on Gundogan’s Man City future.

Guardiola wants Man City to follow PSG, says Wyness

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted he believes Gundogan will be moved on this summer – with City not afraid to splash the cash on a potential replacement.

Tijjani Reijnders and Nico Gonzalez have already been drafted in for big money in recent months, while Ballon d’Or winner Rodri will also be back in action for the 2025-26 campaign.

Wyness insisted Guardiola will want to follow the lead of Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and make his side “appealing and exciting to watch again” with fresh blood.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I do expect City to move Gundogan on.

“I think there is a bit of a wind of change – and it’s a fresh wind of change – coming through City.

“I like what I’m seeing and I think they’re managing it well. I do expect Gundogan to go.

“I think they’ve spent over £100million already in the window. They’re not going to be shy in refreshing the whole squad. Pep’s obviously refreshed and ready to go.

“They’re going to be a force to be reckoned with and they’re going to be up there challenging, there’s no doubt.

“But I do expect Gundogan to go. I think the idea of relying on some of the names he did in the past has gone from Pep’s mind.

“He wants a fresh new challenge. I think he’s seen what PSG have done with fresh young talent coming in, playing as a team.

“Guardiola wants to get that sort of spirit back into Man City and make them appealing and exciting to watch again.”

Man City keen on PSG star

Meanwhile, Football Insider has revealed (15 June) that Man City hold an interest in signing Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma amid speculation surrounding Ederson’s future.

Donnarumma has just one year remaining on his contract, sparking interest from a number of top clubs, but PSG are doing everything they can to tie him down.

Man City have been attempting to land a new shot-stopper amid speculation that Ederson could be set for a move to the Saudi Pro League.
