‘I’ll be honest…’, ‘It’s off the charts’ – Liverpool fans react to Darwin Nunez display in 4-2 win against Newcastle

Darwin Nunez was a huge talking point among Liverpool fans once again on social media following their team’s dramatic 4-2 Premier League win over Newcastle United on Monday night.

The Uruguayan striker missed a string of gilt-edged chances for the home side as they tore Eddie Howe’s visitors apart and bombarded their goal in the most dominant attacking performance by any Premier League club this season.

Indeed, their expected goals figure of 7.27 was the highest ever recorded in a single Premier League game, with only their wastefulness in front of goal and some fine Martin Dubravka goalkeeping preventing a monumental margin of victory.

A Mohamed Salah double and goals from Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo secured the win and means Liverpool are top of the league with a three-point advantage over second-placed Aston Villa.

Nunez started the match and caused chaos to the Newcastle backline but could not add to his five league goals of the season, although he did supply an assist for the opener by Salah.

He was eventually subbed and replaced by Gakpo after 64 minutes with the scores level at 1-1.

Liverpool fans went on to social media in their droves to offer their verdicts on the controversial Nunez, and they differed markedly.

Some claim he is only a small “conversion bump from being elite”, while others suggest he will never be the number nine killer the team needs to win the title this season, and to thrive while Salah is absent for over a month at the African Cup of Nations.
