Exclusive: Danny Mills scoffs at Warburton’s ‘beggars belief’ claim

Danny Mills claimed the first few games will be “absolutely vital” for Leeds United as a number of clubs voice concerns over a 20 June restart.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former England international insisted Championship clubs have enough resources to cope with the quick turnaround despite being afforded a week less preparation time than the Premier League.

QPR boss Mark Warburton told talkSPORT “it beggars belief” that the Championship season is scheduled to recommence on the same weekend as the Premier League.

Premier League sides returned to training a week prior to the Championship and thus had more testing.

Mills was adamant that the “plethora” of medical resources at clubs should have players ready for the restart if players had looked after themselves during lockdown.

“Everyone was expecting it a week later,” he told Football Insider.

“In terms of testing and training the Championship has been a week behind the Premier League but they decided they can get it done.

“The first few games will be absolutely vital but it is the same for everybody so nobody has gained an advantage and that is what you have to look at.

“Championship clubs have a plethora of medical staff and if these players have been looking after themselves in lockdown their base fitness levels should be incredibly high.

“You may get a few injuries but there was never going to be a perfect solution in all of this.”

Leeds will reboot their promotion quest with a trip to Cardiff on 21 June before returning to Elland Road six days last for a critical game against third-placed Fulham.

The Premier League will restart on 17 June but the majority of games will be played on the weekend of the 20th.

In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan has told Football Insider he expects the club to make a statement after major development.
