Everton defender Gethin Jones suffered a serious leg injury while playing for the Under-23 side against Arsenal on Monday, according to a report.

The Liverpool Echo claims that Jones, 21, was on the receiving end of a horror challenge from Tolaji Bola in Southport and after being stretchered off the pitch he was taken to hospital for a scan.

It is understood that there were fears that Jones had suffered a broken leg or ankle, but after tests it was confirmed by doctors that it wasn't that serious and he now faces a trip to London for further analysis.

Nevertheless, it is still a major blow for the young right-back who is now said to be waiting to see a specialist later this week after the swelling has reduced.

Jones has made one senior appearance in his time at Everton and has been ever-present in David Unsworth's Under-23 side this term in Premier League 2 and in the EFL Cup when he wore the captain's armband against Notts County.

Jones' injury is the latest in a long line of blows to Everton defenders with Seamus Coleman recovering from his own major blow of a broken leg while Phil Jagielka and Michael Keane had also recently suffered blows.
