Injury to prolific Rangers star may be unexpected blessing in disguise

COMMENT

Normally it would be a disaster for team when a prolific goalscorer suffers an injury, but that might not be the case with Rangers and Josh Windass.

The 24-year-old has scored 17 goals so far for the Gers this season, which is a terrific record from midfield, but on occasions it seems like his all-round game isn’t good enough.

A case in point would be the Gers’ recent 3-2 league defeat to Celtic at Ibrox which all but ended their hopes of a serious title challenge.

Windass scored a fine goal to give the Light Blues the lead in the game after only two minutes, but from that moment on his influence on the game was negligible, as he struggled to get into the match.

Windass’ injury, which was suffered in the recent 2-2 draw with Motherwell, could perhaps lead to a formation change from manager Graeme Murty.

Instead of playing the Englishman as a sort of second striker/winger hybrid behind Alfredo Morelos, Murty could go with two forwards, and play Jason Cummings in a partnership with Morelos.

The pairing worked well together against Falkirk in the Scottish Cup, and Murty could try it again against Dundee on Saturday.

There’s little doubt that Windass has been one of the Gers’ best players this season, but his goals have at times distracted from his overall performance.

It will be interesting to see if the Gers’ results pick-up when he is out of the side.
