Insider issues verdict on Tottenham moving for Wijnaldum after Sky update

Tottenham would struggle to sign Gini Wijnaldum from PSG if he became a target this January.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Sky Sports reported on Wednesday of last week (8 December) the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder is open to a return to the Premier League with the Arsenal a potential destination.

He has not had the best start to life in the French capital and recently revealed he was “not happy” at his new club.

The 31-year-old told Dutch outlet NOS earlier this year (11 October) the situation at PSG was “not what I wanted”.

Wenham claims Tottenham would struggle to beat off the competition for Wijnaldum’s signature.

“The first issue would be the wages, I’m sure we can’t match the wages he is on at PSG,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I imagine he’s on a substantial sum considering they were able to swoop in at the eleventh hour and steal him from his supposed dream move to Barcelona.

“The other obstacle would be the number of rival clubs in for him if he does become available.

“We are then fighting in a crowded market and we can’t offer Champions League or even Europa League football right now.

“I do wonder if he really is available as well because he comes on in nearly every game.

“He is a brilliant player but I just don’t see it.”

Wijnaldum has only managed eight Ligue 1 starts this season.

The former Newcastle man left Liverpool in the summer of 2021 after failing to agree terms on a new deal.
