Insider: Tottenham set to lose £8m on Doherty in January after latest news
Matt Doherty could leave Tottenham for just £7million in January.
That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.
On 22 December, The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare reported Doherty, 29, will be allowed to leave Tottenham in January.
The defender joined Tottenham from Wolves in the summer of 2020 but he has failed to nail down a starting position.
Wenham claims Doherty’s value has diminished to the point where he could leave for less than half of what he was signed for.
“We signed him for £15million,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“He certainly hasn’t improved on that value, if anything he has declined.
“I’m looking at a fee of £7million or something like that. In this situation, you have to bite the bullet and take a loss.
“It hasn’t worked out for him at Tottenham and that is a shame because we all knew how good he was at Wolves.
“It looks like he’s available and I have seen him linked with a few clubs over the last few weeks, Roma was one I thought was a bit odd.
“I look at the bottom Premier League, would Norwich or Burnley pay £7million for an established Premier League right-back?
“You can’t rule that out in my opinion. I just hope he can get back to playing football again.”

Doherty has made 10 appearances for Tottenham this season.
He has made four appearances in the Premier League but they have all been off the bench.
