Insiders reveal how Man United feel about Michael Carrick becoming permanent manager

Michael Carrick could become Man United manager on a permanent basis following an incredible start to life at Old Trafford.

That is according to iNews (19 February), who have been told by sources that the dynamic in the former Middlesbrough boss’ backroom staff is the “perfect balance”.

It is understood that Carrick now stands a good chance of staying on at the Theatre of Dreams, winning four of five games in charge, including back-to-back matches against Man City and Arsenal.

A 96th-minute Benjamin Sesko strike stopped the Red Devils from losing their unbeaten streak, drawing 1-1 at the London Stadium, with a trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium up next.

Multiple big names have been linked with the job, such as Roberto De Zerbi and Oliver Glasner, but Carrick remaining at Man United appears to be the favoured outcome right now.

Supporters have instantly fallen in love with Carrick’s football, doing things that Ruben Amorim never could, such as keep clean sheets against Man City and Tottenham.

One major bookmaker has priced the 44-year-old at 1/1 to be United manager come the beginning of 2026-27 campaign, making him the favourite to land the role on a permanent basis.

Oliver Glasner is second in the race, given his situation at Crystal Palace, with Gareth Southgate, Julian Nagelsmann and Luis Enrique all included.

There is still plenty of football to be played between now and the end of the season, including games against Newcastle United, Chelsea and Liverpool, which could shape the interim manager’s future.

What has Carrick said about staying on at Old Trafford?

It is not the first time that Carrick has been in charge at Old Trafford, having also taken over on a temporary basis between November 2021 and December 2021.

Then, he had a very successful three-year spell at the Riverside Stadium.

Since returning to his former club, though, he has stressed just how much he loves managing the Red Devils, which will be music to the supporters’ ears right now.

Speaking to the media, he said, “I don’t decide how long that’s going to be, but I love being here, and while I’m here, I’ll give everything I can.

“And I always plan for the long-term future for the benefit of the football club. That’s how I believe it should be.”

He has made it incredibly clear that Old Trafford is his home, and if those making the decisions offer him the role permanently, he is only likely to have one answer.
