Ipswich vs Leicester City ref watch: Three decisions John Busby got wrong
John Busby had several contentious decisions to unravel at Portman Road as Ipswich Town and Leicester City clashed in the Championship.
Against the run of play, the Foxes opened the score via Patson Daka, with the Tractor Boys struggling to break down the backline in front of home supporters on Saturday, 7 March.
That was, at least, until Sindre Walle Egeli replaced Wes Burns in the second half, hitting the back of the net just seven minutes later, and tipping the scales away from Leicester.
Kieran McKenna and his players will be disappointed not to have secured all three points, but both sets of fans are likely to have issues with the referee’s performance at Portman Road.
Patson Daka takes advantage of soft free-kick
Patson Daka got the away supporters bouncing in the 39th minute, netting his first goal in five games, which was ultimately against the run of play at Portman Road.
The striker had originally won the dangerous free-kick before sneaking unmarked into the penalty area, tucking his effort past Christian Walton from 16 yards out.
However, there was an argument to make that Busby had awarded a very soft free-kick in Leicester’s favour to begin with. Daka had gone down extremely easily under pressure from Azor Matusiwa.
John Busby misses blatant first-half penalty call
Before the half-time whistle, Leif Davis went to ground inside the penalty area. Daka was involved once again, appearing to leave a late foot on the dangerous full-back.
Davis had flicked the ball over the back-tracking forward before being clattered by his opposition, but the referee was having absolutely none of it, waving away any calls straight away.
You could tell exactly what the home crowd made of the referee’s first-half performance, booing him off at the half-time break.
Anis Mehmeti fortunate to avoid caution
With the Tractor Boys still pushing for an equaliser at this point, Anis Mehmeti threw himself to the floor inside the penalty area, with replays showing very minimal contact from the Leicester defender.
Busby immediately waved away calls for a penalty, and rightly so. However, it left questions over why Mehmeti was not shown a yellow card for simulation if it was never a penalty.
