‘It’s a big cash loss’ – Liverpool wanted Darwin Nunez to stay for 10 years
Liverpool were hoping Darwin Nunez would be their star striker for 10 years following his big-money signing three years ago.
The Uruguay international joined Liverpool for an initial £74million from Benfica in June 2022, with the deal rising to a potential £85million in add-ons.
Nunez registered seven goals and seven assists in 47 appearances last season, taking his overall tally to 40 goals and 26 assists in 143 outings.
However, the 26-year-old only started 17 times following Arne Slot’s arrival at Anfield last summer.
Nunez has now been sold to Al-Hilal for a deal worth £46.2million, rising to £56.6million in potential add-ons.
The striker won the Community Shield, Carabao Cup and the Premier League during his three-year stint on Merseyside.

Liverpool have broke even on Darwin Nunez deal
This article contains exclusive comment from Stefan Borson, a former financial adviser to Man City.
Nunez largely divided opinion among Liverpool fans before making his move to Al-Hilal.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “It’s a big cash loss.
“They paid £70million or something for him. Obviously, they’ve had big wages over the years.
“He’s not really delivered. He’s done okay. I mean, they won the league.
“It’s not terrible, and they’ve sold him probably for around about his book value. Maybe slightly more than his book value.
“So, from a PSR perspective, they’ve made a little bit or break even. They haven’t lost anything from a PSR perspective.
“But you buy a player for £70million at 22 when they bought him, I guess they would have looked at it and hoped he was going to be their striker for the next 10 years.
“It’s not worked out.”

Tottenham could hijack RB Leipzig’s move for Liverpool star
In terms of another potential exit at Anfield, Football Insider revealed on 8 August Tottenham could hijack RB Leipzig’s move for Harvey Elliott, who has emerged as a target following James Maddison’s injury.
Leipzig are believed to be the current front-runners in the race to sign the England Under-21 international, but Spurs are keeping a close eye on the situation with a move in mind.
Former Spurs scout Mick Brown told Football Insider Tottenham are working to replace Maddison before the window closes.
