‘It’s just not happening for you’ – Mohamed Salah told he will be axed by Liverpool

Matt Le Tissier thinks that Mo Salah needs to be dropped to the Liverpool bench by Arne Slot soon following a slow start to the 2025-26 campaign.

Premier League legend Matt Le Tissier has exclusively told Football Insider that Mo Salah should not be written off due to his quality but has not been playing well enough to justify starting every Premier League and Champions League game.

Salah is a Liverpool and Premier League icon for his spectacular exploits at the club since arriving from Roma in 2017, with two titles, a UCL triumph and endless individual records to his name.

The Egyptian winger notched 29 goals and 18 assists in the league last season as the Reds cruised to glory, but things have not gone his way in recent months amid the whole squad’s ongoing lack of form.

Salah extended his run without a Liverpool goal to five games on Sunday (19 October) as Man United won 2-1 at Anfield and Arne Slot‘s side slipped to third in the league after four games without a win.

Mo Salah has not been near his best so far this season

Salah has registered three goals and assists each 11 appearances up to now in 2025-26, which aren’t bad numbers, but his performances have suffered a clear drop-off compared to the majority of last season.

Wayne Rooney recently slammed Salah‘s work-rate and said he looked “lost” after he failed to help Conor Bradley out against Chelsea as they slipped to a late 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Slot saw fit to substitute the 33-year-old five minutes from time against United on Sunday after he failed to have much of an impact, with just one shot on target, no successful dribbles and only two of his six ground duels won [Fotmob].

Jamie Carragher admitted on Sky Sports after Sunday’s loss that he would like to see Salah dropped from the starting line-up for one of Liverpool’s next two games against Eintracht Frankfurt and Brentford, which is a sentiment shared by Le Tissier.

Le Tissier insists that Slot should drop Mo Salah soon

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Southampton and England star explained how he thinks that Salah can get back to his previous outstanding form this season, but only if he spends some time out of the Liverpool starting eleven soon.

He said: “(Dropping Salah) is a big call that Arne Slot’s going to have to make at some point. What’s he, 33 years old now? Which, in the grand scheme of things, isn’t really old, but when you’ve been doing what he’s been doing over such a long period of time, there was going to probably come a time when you just start struggling a little bit and you don’t have a decent run of form.

Because he’s kept his form for so long, you just thought when’s this ever going to end? He’s not on the Cristiano Ronaldo kind of level or the (Lionel) Messi level, he’s a tier below that, and so I think the manager is going to, at some point, have to go, do you know what, Mo? It’s just not happening for you at the moment.

Have a little rest. Find your form again. Just come back and train hard. And we’ll see what we can do with you in training, get you back to where you once were. I think at 33, it’s way too early to write him off.

But at some point, I think he will have to have a little break. I think he’s also got the African Cup of Nations coming up as well, so he’s going to be missing in (December and) January anyway. It’ll be interesting to see what Slot does in that regard.”
