‘If league’s cancelled, that’s fairest’ – Exclusive: Mills reacts to big Leeds update from Parry
Danny Mills urged the governing bodies to promote Leeds United and West Brom if the season is cancelled even though EFL chairman Rick Parry was today coy on the possibility.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former England international suggested promoting the Championship’s top two sides would be the “fairest option” if the remaining fixtures cannot be completed.
Providing evidence to the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee about the impact of coronavirus, Parry claimed it was “premature” to speak of crowing champions or promoting teams.
Last month UEFA advised European leagues to apply sporting merit in the eventuality the season’s remaining fixtures cannot be completed.
However, the Dutch league have declared their season over with no champions, relegation or promotion.
When asked by Football Insider if promoting the Whites and the Baggies would be the fairest approach for the Premier League and EFL to take, Mills said: “It is not what everybody wants but I cannot see any other option.
“I think relegation from the Premier League will still be the issue and if that is going to happen.
“Teams may just be promoted and we have two extra teams, Leeds and West Brom, in the Premier League next season.
“The more contentious issue is whether teams would come down.
“Leeds and West Brom are top of the table and they have pretty much been there most of the season and if the league is cancelled that would be the fairest thing.”
Leeds are currently seven points clear of third-placed Fulham and a point clear of second-placed West Brom with nine fixtures remaining.
Relegation-threatened sides West Ham and Brighton have objected to the Premier League’s proposal of 8-10 neutral venues being used to complete the remainder of the season.
In other Leeds United news, Noel Whelan has told Football Insider he ‘can only see two outcomes’ after FA update.
