‘I’ve checked with my sources’ – Everton backed to sign Man United star in January

Everton have been tipped to make a move for a Manchester United attacker in the January transfer window.

The Toffees have had a decent start to the Premier League campaign, but are lacking a goalscoring number nine.

Everton have been urged to bring in a striker when the window reopens, to replace the misfiring duo of Beto and Thierno Barry.

Between them, the pair have scored just one league goal so far this season, leaving the likes of Iliman Ndiaye to shoulder the load in attacking areas.

Everton have shortlisted Joshua Zirkzee

On Tuesday (7 October), Football Insider revealed that Joshua Zirkzee could be set to leave Man United in January.

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes that Zirkzee could well end up at Everton, due to his current age and potential.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted that the 24-year-old is a ‘David Moyes-type player’ and would add another element to the Toffees’ frontline.

Wyness added that according to his sources, Zirkzee’s name is under consideration among the Everton recruitment team.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: Now I’ve been checking with my sources and his name, I can definitely say, is under consideration. Of course, a lot will depend in January on the price.

“He’s 24, the right age for Moyes right now. I think if you look at what Moyes is trying to do, it isn’t quite working with either Beto or Barry in terms of the striker. So I think adding the movement of Zirkzee would work.

“He is a very busy forward. He’s not just a penalty box, stick it in there and knock it in player. He does move around as well. I think that would add another element, and I think he is a Moyes-type player. He did very well before he went to United and is obviously a talent.

“If it’s the right person, then Moyes would look at strengthening in January in that attacking area. He’s got a few other issues around the defence, but we all know that up front would be one area, and Zirkzee would fit the bill.

“I’m sure there are two or three others that may be under consideration, but Zirkzee is definitely one that’s on the shortlist.”

Everton face battle to secure Zirkzee deal

Everton are joined by the likes of West Ham United in the race for Zirkzee’s signature, so will face a battle to sign the Dutch striker.

He is now well down the pecking order under Ruben Amorim, following the summer signings of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha.

The 24-year-old has played less than 90 minutes of Premier League football in total so far this season, and is yet to start a competitive game for the Red Devils.

If Zirkzee is looking for game time, then a move away from Man United is surely imminent, and he will have a number of top-flight clubs fighting to bring him in.
