Wirtz played a major role in Leverkusen’s unbeaten domestic double in 2023/24, as well as reaching that season’s Europa League final and winning the 2024/25 DFL-Supercup.
Now, the 22-year-old will look to help Liverpool retain their Premier League title after Arne Slot cruised to glory in his first season in charge.
Florian Wirtz nets first Liverpool goal
Liverpool have been in Asia preparing for the new season, first losing 4-2 to AC Milan in Hong Kong before beating Yokohama F. Marinos 3-1 on Wednesday.
After going 1-0 down against the odds in the 55th minute, Liverpool hit back quickly in the 62nd, with Wirtz levelling the scores — before youngsters Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha completed the comeback.
Wirtz applied a powerful finish after great work from Curtis Jones and Mohammed Salah, showcasing exactly why Liverpool went to such great lengths to bring him to Anfield.
And it’s safe to say supporters are very excited by this glimpse of Wirtz’s considerable talent.

While fans were busy lauding Wirtz’s first goal for Liverpool, the player himself took to Instagram to celebrate the landmark moment.
“Good test – first goal in the books,” Wirtz captioned his post featuring images of himself from Wednesday’s match.
Bayer Leverkusen once again replied with applause emojis, while new teammates Hugo Ekitike, Curtis Jones, Wataru Endo and Milos Kerkez all liked the post.
Wirtz’s national team partner Jamal Musiala and even Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu did likewise.
The likes of Wirtz and Ekitike have primed Liverpool for an incredible title defence in 2025/26.
However, the Reds don’t appear to be done yet as they eye up moves for Newcastle United duo Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, while Real Madrid star Rodrygo is also on their radar.
If Arne Slot’s side continue in the market like this, Arsenal and Manchester City may be powerless to stop them next season.
