Jack Butland could become Rangers ‘legend’ after ‘massive’ development – McAvennie

Jack Butland could become a Rangers “legend” akin to Andy Goram and Allan McGregor if he remains at the club for the foreseeable future.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Celtic and West Ham striker Frank McAvennie claimed that his excellent performances have met the standards of what is expected from the Ibrox faithful.

The Gers reportedly rejected an approach from a Premier League side to sign the Englishman, who has been one of the club’s best performing players this season, last month.

Since his move to Ibrox for free after the expiration of his Crystal Palace contract in the summer, he has started all but one game in all competitions and has conceded just 11 goals in the league.

McAvennie claimed Rangers declining advances for Butland was a “massive statement” and it means he can now to on to embed himself into the club’s history.

“I heard there was an offer for Butland,” he told Football Insider.

“If Rangers rejected that, then that is a massive statement.

“It would have been good business.

“He’s come up to Rangers and he’s done a brilliant job.

“He knows the expectations of Rangers goalkeepers.

“Andy Goram – the fans still chant his name to this day.

“Then McGregor too, so Butland could become a legend at the club if he’s there for another three or four years.

“That’s a hell of a thing to do because he’d be remembered long after he leaves.

“He could go back to a mediocre club in the Premier League and fight for survival – it’s up to him.”
