Jamaal Lascelles now expected to quit Newcastle as transfer escape route emerges

Jamaal Lascelles has been a forgotten Newcastle star in recent campaigns despite being the Magpies’ captain.

Since the start of the 2024-25 campaign, the centre-back has only made two appearances, both coming off the bench early into the current season.

Much of this is due to injuries, with Lascelles suffering the longest ACL injury in Premier League history, which kept him out of action for 407 days.

Now, with his contract set to expire in the summer, he could be set for a January move, with West Ham showing interest in the 32-year-old.

West Ham show interest in Jamaal Lascelles

According to the Daily Mail print edition on 15 January, West Ham have emerged as a potential destination for Lascelles.

West Ham are currently looking to stay in the Premier League after a dire start to the season, and defensive reinforcements could help make this a reality.

Lascelles is expected to leave Newcastle this month. However, the Magpies want to cover their own defensive crisis first before they make a sale.

Therefore, the Hammers may have to wait until the end of the window to bring the Newcastle captain into the London Stadium.

What other business are Newcastle expected to do in the January transfer window?

In November, Football Insider revealed that Eddie Howe wanted a left-back, right-back, central midfielder and potentially another striker to sign for Newcastle this month.

The Magpies have had a mixed campaign to date, but a recent surge in form has put them back in contention for Champions League qualification.

Nevertheless, Newcastle are yet to sign anyone this month to boost these hopes.

As it stands, potential exits have been more widely reported compared to incomings as the transfer window reaches its midway point.

It remains to be seen if Newcastle look to bring in any new faces in the remaining weeks of the month.
