James Garner told to complete Man United exit after latest – pundit

Noel Whelan has urged midfielder James Garner to leave Man United for the good of his career this summer.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, backed the 21-year-old to rejoin Nottingham Forest after his “excellent” loan spell with the promoted side.

According to the Daily Mirror (28 May), Garner’s Man United future remains up in the air as new boss Erik ten Hag plans to assess the midfielder’s talents before making a decision.

The report claims a number of established Premier League sides are also eyeing a move for the former Watford loanee, including Southampton and Leicester.

Garner notched four goals and 10 assists across 49 games for Forest this term as the two-time European Cup winners earned promotion to the top flight.

Whelan insisted the midfielder “deserves more” than a bit-part role at Man United and encouraged him to rejoin Forest.

“I think Garner will be seriously considering making a deal with Forest,” he told Football Insider

“It’s going to be a tough ask to get into that United side, and I’m sure he knows that.

“He’s already started his progression at Forest. He’s built relationships with the manager, the fans, the players.

“I’m pretty sure Forest would love to have him permanently. I think the best move for the player is to leave Man United, for sure.

“He needs to get the game time at this stage in his career.

He’s earned a place in the Premier League with Forest and he deserves more than to sit on United’s bench – because he’s been excellent.

“I wouldn’t be encouraging him to go back to United if I were his family or his agent, that’s for sure.”
