James Maddison reacts to Guglielmo Vicario’s Tottenham message after heated clash
Guglielmo Vicario appears to have repaired his relationship with Tottenham fans following the controversy surrounding his actions against AZ Alkmaar.
Tottenham staged a comeback in the Europa League on 13 March, overturning a 1-0 first-leg defeat to secure a 3-1 victory on the night and book their place in the quarter-finals.
Wilson Odobert delivered a standout performance as he netted twice, while James Maddison also got on the scoresheet.
However, there was a moment of concern when Lucas Bergvall’s mix-up with Odobert led to an AZ Alkmaar goal, briefly levelling the tie on aggregate before Odobert’s second strike sealed the victory.
The atmosphere around the club feels significantly different from last week—especially for Vicario, who found himself at the centre of controversy following the first-leg defeat.
Vicario had apologised to Tottenham fans after he was seen gesturing towards them after the loss, seemingly demanding more vocal support.
This time, however, the Italian’s message to the fans carries a much more positive tone as he looks to move forward and rebuild that connection.
Tottenham stars show support for Guglielmo Vicario after Europa League win
Vicario’s reaction at full-time was likely to be different from last week, and one of relief and appreciation as Spurs secured their place in the Europa League quarter-finals.
The goalkeeper shared a message with the supporters, writing: “Together is better. Quarterfinals. COYS.”
A number of Tottenham players showed their support, with goalscorer Maddison and Djed Spence liking the post, while Mickey van de Ven also left a comment.
The 28-year-old has been a key figure for Spurs this season, making 21 appearances. However, after suffering an injury that kept him sidelined for 21 matches, Tottenham opted to bring in Antonin Kinsky during the January transfer window as additional cover.

Guglielmo Vicario backed to retain starting spot despite Antonin Kinsky competition
Some Tottenham fans had called for Vicario to be dropped in favour of Kinsky, who impressed in his limited opportunities since arriving in January whilst their first-choice goalkeeper was injured
Those calls likely intensified after the Italian’s tense exchange with supporters following Tottenham’s first-leg defeat to AZ Alkmaar.
However, with Spurs already out of the FA Cup and falling short in the Carabao Cup semi-finals against Liverpool, the Europa League remains their final chance to end a 17-year trophy drought. Ange Postecoglou will hope both the squad and the fanbase can stay united as they push for silverware.
