Tavernier raves about impact of senior Rangers man in Old Firm draw v Celtic

Rangers defender James Tavernier believes the Gers performance in Saturday’s Old Firm clash “spoke volumes” about the work manager Graeme Murty has done since taking the reins at Ibrox.
The Gers dominated their bitter rivals for long spells at Celtic Park and were unlucky to only come away with a point after being denied by some fantastic goalkeeping from Craig Gordon.
Murty took over at Ibrox on an interim basis for the second time in 2017 following Pedro Caixinha’s sacking in October before being given the role until the end of the season.
Tavernier believes the performance against Brendan Rodgers’ side “augurs well for the future” and admitted that he enjoys working under the former Scotland international.
“It is good working under him on the training field and that is reflected in the performance on Saturday,” Tavernier said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“We put on a good display for the fans. That spoke volumes about what a good job he is doing.
“The game plan was the same as it always is. We knew we had to keep it tight at the back and I think we did that fantastically.
“But he also told us to try and play football when we got the ball, try to create spaces that we can play in, try to penetrate them. I thought we did that well at times as well. We were unlucky that we didn’t get the win. It augurs well for the future.”
Tavernier was one of Rangers’ best players in the 0-0 draw as he stifled Scott Sinclair and Kieran Tierney’s forays forward while proving to be a potent attacking threat for the Light Blues.
The 26-year-old has made 121 appearances for the Ibrox side since moving north from Wigan Athletic in 2015 and has been a mainstay in the side under Mark Warburton, Pedro Caixinha and Murty.
Since arriving in Scotland, Tavernier has lifted the Scottish Championship and Scottish Challenge Cup but is yet to get his hands on a major trophy.
