James Tavernier sends Rangers message after fans ‘want him sold’
James Tavernier has posted an upbeat message on social media following Rangers’ impressive win over Fenerbahce.
Rangers took a step towards the Europa League quarter-finals with a commanding 3-1 victory over Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce on 6 March.
Cyriel Dessers was at the centre of VAR drama, scoring within seven minutes and seeing two further goals ruled out for offside.
Vaclav Cerny’s brace ensured his team capitalised on their dominance, putting Barry Ferguson’s side in a strong position ahead of the second leg.
James Tavernier had a fine display for Rangers and adapted well to a back-three formation rather than his usual position. Rangers fans have been critical of Tavernier in recent weeks, with calls for him to follow former manager Philippe Clement out of the club.
Despite this, the captain shared his thoughts on the victory, choosing to focus on the positives and the team’s strong European showing.
Todd Cantwell responds to James Tavernier’s message after controversial post
Tavernier shared his thoughts following the win, taking to Instagram with a message of appreciation for the team and fans. He wrote: “Only halfway there. The boys were superb this evening against a strong side. We go again next Thursday. Big thanks to the travelling fans that made the trip – get home safely.”
Among those reacting to his post was former Rangers player Todd Cantwell, as well as Dominic Solanke, who recently picked up an injury during Tottenham’s defeat to AZ Alkmaar.
Cantwell has been at the centre of Rangers fans’ criticism after tagging the right-back in a controversial social media post just a day after Clement was sacked.
Some felt the Cantwell’s post unfairly dragged Tavernier into controversy, leading to further scrutiny on the captain.
Despite the backlash, the 33-year-old responded with a strong performance against Fenerbahce, reinforcing his importance to the team. Having already made 41 appearances in all competitions this season, he remains important to the team

Football Insider revealed back in November that Rangers could consider selling Tavernier due to an inconsistent start to the season.
While he has since remained a regular starter, uncertainty still looms over his long-term future at the club with just one year left on his deal.
Regardless of speculation, one thing is clear—Tavernier remains committed to the cause, showing appreciation for the fans despite ongoing debate over his performances.
