Jamie Carragher delivers ruthless assessment of Tottenham, has a pop at Leeds
By Dominic Toner
Jamie Carragher believes that Tottenham need to turn up to big games if they are to win anything and compared them to Leeds’ team in the past.
The Sky Sports pundit delivered a ruthless assessment of Spurs following their 2-0 defeat against Liverpool on Saturday.
Sadio Mane scored a first-half brace for the hosts and put a huge dent in the title hopes of the north London club.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side poor away form against their top six rivals continued at Anfield and they now face a tough battle to finish in the top four this season.
Carragher has urged Spurs to step up and win big games, or they will become like a Leeds side who never won anything during the Premier League era despite having a talented squad of players.
The Ex-Liverpool defender acknowledged that Spurs do possess a great starting line-up that can compete with any team in the league, but they go into the shells for the big matches.
“I’m a massive fan of that manager (Pochettino) and that team, some great players in that side,” Carragher told Monday Night Football on Sky Sports One. “They can’t be remembered over the past 18 months as a team who didn’t win anything, seen it to often with Spurs.
“If that doesn’t change, they are going to become like Leeds – they didn’t win anything. You wanted to be able to say you won that, if they don’t win big games, they will never win anything.”
Spurs are second-placed in the league table despite the Liverpool loss, but their 11-game unbeaten run was finally ended.
They will be hoping to get back to winning ways in the Premier League on 26 February against Stoke, but have two legs against Belgian side Gent in the Europa League, plus a fifth-round FA Cup tie with Fulham to look forward to first.
