Jan Vertonghen delivers Tottenham title verdict, shares reason to be optimistic
By Dominic Toner
Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has conceded it will be very difficult to catch Premier League leaders Chelsea, but has pointed towards a tough set of fixtures for their rivals after the international break.
Spurs return to their league campaign on 1 April against Burnley and their next four games are against sides in the bottom half of the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have matches against both Manchester clubs during the same period and could find it difficult to maintain their lead at the league’s summit.
Antonio Conte’s side are currently 10 points clear of second-placed Spurs and are in a great to clinch their second title in just three years.
Vertonghen has revealed his side have not given up on the title and is looking forward to an interesting run after the international break.
“We’re trying to catch Chelsea, but it will be very hard,” Vertonghen said, as quoted by Sky Sports. “They look very strong at the moment and you have to be realistic. But it could be a good couple of weeks for us.”
Spurs are the closest challengers to Chelsea and are seen as the most likely side to try challenge the champions-elect this season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are one of only three teams to beat the Blues this season, with Dele Alli’s brace securing a 2-0 home victory back in January.
The north London club are in a great position to secure a spot in the top four this season, but it would surely take a near faultless run to catch Chelsea.
The two London rivals will clash on 22 April in the EFL Cup semi-final at Wembley and Spurs will be hoping they have closed the league game by then.
In other Tottenham news, the club have moved a giant step closer to securing a landmark deal.
