Jan Vertonghen: Words cannot describe the quality of this Tottenham player

Jan Vertonghen insists his fellow Tottenham and Belgium teammate Mousa Dembele is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League.

Since joining the club from Fulham in 2012, the midfield ace has come on leaps and bounds as a player, and is now one of Mauricio Pochettino’s most consistent performers.

The 29-year-old has made 21 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham this season, and has shown his value to their title challenge with a series of commanding displays.

He has been a major part of a side that has kept four clean sheets from their last five Premier League appearances, establishing a formidable midfield partnership with summer signing Victor Wanyama.

However, much of the praise this season has gone to Dembele’s Tottenham team-mates, but Vertonghen believes that is because people don’t know how good he really is.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the defender spoke of his close relationship with Dembele, and admitted that words could not describe his ‘special’ talents.

He said: “I don’t think people know how good Moussa is. You can ask every single player in the team and I don’t think you can describe how good Mousa is.

“You can only know if you play with him or against him, see him train for a couple of weeks, then you’ll find out.

“He’s a special player and I can’t think of anyone else who is a bit like him. For me, he’s up there with the best two or three midfielders in the league.”

Dembele had to wait until the clash with Sunderland on September 18 to make his first Premier League appearance this season, having been forced to serve a six-match ban.

He was sent-off for violent conduct in the 2-2 with Chelsea at the end of last season, after appearing to gouge at the eyes of Diego Costa.

The suspension saw him miss out on important games against Everton and Liverpool at the start of the current campaign, but he has been a regular in Pochettino’s side since.

In other Tottenham news, losing this key player would be a major dent to Tottenham’s title ambitions.
