Jansson/Leeds investigation picks up pace as FIFA spokesman issues statement
By Matt Bullin
FIFA have issued a statement on the contractual dispute between Leeds and Torino over the transfer of Pontus Jansson.
The Yorkshire Evening Post claims Torino have lodged a formal complaint to FIFA, claiming that the Whites have delayed the payment of a £3.5million transfer fee until July.
The 26-year-old is due to join the Elland Road club on a permanent deal, having completed a full season on loan.
There was a clause Jansson’s loan which stated Leeds could sign him on a permanent basis if he made more than 22 appearances, which he has, making 36 in all competitions.
The 12-time Sweden international reached 22 appearances in January, but it is understood the Yorkshire giants chose to delay the permanent deal until the summer window, after he agreed a three-year deal in February.
The report claims Torino are complaining because the fee was supposed to be paid immediately after Jansson made his 22nd appearance for United.
The Elland Road club are yet to comment, however FIFA have finally spoken out about the issue.
A FIFA spokesman told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “We can confirm that there is a standard contractual dispute between the two clubs in connection with the international transfer of Pontus Jansson.
“Since investigations are ongoing and until proceedings are completed please understand we cannot comment further.”
Jansson has become a key player for Garry Monk’s side and has attracted interest from the Premier League, but Leeds will hope this dispute is sorted soon and he is able to complete the permanent move, as agreed.
In other Leeds news, this player has confirmed he has left the club.
