January signing reveals 'mad' 24 hours before joining Rangers
Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty has revealed the crazy 24 hours that saw him preparing to play Hearts for Hamilton only to be told he was now a Rangers player.
The midfielder put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year deal to join his boyhood heroes on January 25th but revealed he was set to play for Hamilton 24 hours earlier until he was told he couldn’t.
Docherty was one of six new signings at Ibrox in January alongside Sean Goss, Jason Cummings, Russell Martin, Jamie Murphy and Glenn Middleton.
The 21-year-old admitted it was a “bit mad” as he waited for Rangers to complete the deal at their end.
“Believe it or not I was actually on my way to the Hamilton game against Hearts [on January 24] and I received a phone call to say that the deal had been done and that I was now a Rangers player,” Docherty said, as quoted by The Boot Room.
“It was all a bit mad. I still wasn’t sure if I was going to be playing that night but after the phone call I quickly had a chat with (someone at Hamilton) who said obviously you won’t play because we’ve signed all of the forms, and it’s up to Rangers now to do their stuff.”
Docherty made his Rangers debut just three days later after coming off the bench in the 2-1 win over Ross County.
The Scotland Under-21 international came through the ranks at Hamilton’s academy before going on to make over 100 appearances for the New Douglas Park side before making the move to Ibrox.
Despite leaving Hamilton last month, Docherty will make a quick return to his old stomping ground when the Gers travel to face the Accies next weekend.
Before that, the midfielder could be handed his first start for the Gers in Sunday’s Scottish Cup tie with Ayr United at Somerset Park.
