Jarrod Bowen reacts to Angel Gomes’ transfer announcement amid West Ham links

Jarrod Bowen has reacted to Angel Gomes’ latest announcement at Lille after being heavily linked with a move to West Ham.

Football Insider reported in March that West Ham had made a move to beat Tottenham to Gomes’ signature ahead of the summer transfer window, and that could still be possible.

The 24-year-old has risen to fame since leaving Man United in 2020, making 134 appearances for Lille, quickly becoming a star over in Ligue 1, and even earning his England debut.

It is no surprise to see the interest rise significantly in the midfielder, especially from the Premier League, and any teams keeping tabs have just had their alarm bells set off ahead of the summer transfer window.

Angel Gomes set to leave Lille on a free transfer

Taking to Instagram (19 May), Gomes confirmed his exit, writing: “After four unforgettable years at LOSC Lille, it’s time for me to say goodbye,” going on to talk about the players and staff at the club.

He continued: “I’m proud of what we achieved together and thankful for every moment. To the fans, thank you for your amazing support and for believing in me. I will forever be grateful.

Reacting to the message, Newcastle United’s Sven Botman wrote: “Myy broskii,” while Brighton’s Carlos Baleba commented: “La machine,” but it is Bowen’s liking of the post that West Ham fans will notice.

Graham Potter must be active in the transfer market to keep West Ham job

Football Insider verdict

Signing Gomes on a free transfer would be an incredible transfer just weeks into the summer window, but it will take more than just one player to release the pressure on the current manager.

West Ham fans already want to part ways with Graham Potter, having won just four of his 18 matches since replacing Julen Lopetegui, most recently losing to Nottingham Forest on Sunday, 18 May.

While Niclas Fullkrug and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have grown into their roles at the London Stadium, moves for Guido Rodriguez, Crysencio Summerville, and Luis Guilherme have backfired so far.

It could take quite the summer of rebuilding if the former Brighton and Chelsea figure is to remain in the job during the 2025/26 campaign, but it remains to be seen how much David Sullivan is willing to open his pockets.

Securing Gomes’ services on a free transfer would certainly set the tone for the summer transfer window, but with the Hammers sitting 15th in the league table, it could be a hard sell to a player who has featured in the Champions League recently.
