Jaw-dropping Tyrick Mitchell details emerge, Thomas Tuchel cannot ignore this

Tyrick Mitchell was omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad yet again on Friday (7 November) despite some impressive long-term form.

The 26-year-old still has just two international caps, both coming back in March 2022 during his solitary Three Lions call-up.

Mitchell made his debut against Switzerland, coming off the bench in a 2-1 win, before making another substitute appearance three days later during a 3-0 victory over the Ivory Coast.

At a time when England are struggling for top-class left-backs, the Crystal Palace man has been unfairly denied the chance to stake his claim for a place in Tuchel’s side, and the numbers prove it.

Tyrick Mitchell shines for Crystal Palace

Just two days after once again being ignored by Tuchel, Mitchell put in a stunning performance for Crystal Palace against Brighton, highlighting his omission from the England squad.

The Eagles were held to a goalless draw by their rivals, but the left-back was the standout player. Mitchell prevented exciting Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh from making any real impact on the contest, with the defensive capabilities that have made him a fan favourite at Selhurst Park on full show.

Against Brighton, Mitchell became the first player to win possession 12 or more times and win 12 or more duels in the Premier League this season. The defender is absolutely vital in Oliver Glasner’s system in terms of preventing opposition attacks, as well as completing turnovers and launching Palace’s own offensive moves.

The two-time England international is clearly very solid defensively, but has often been criticised for his lack of quality going forward. This season has seen a change to the narrative however, and against Brighton, Mitchell recorded the most touches in the game (88), often bombing on down the left wing and contributing to Crystal Palace attacks.

It was a display worthy of a place in the England squad. With Dan Burn being sent off for Newcastle United against Brentford, Mitchell has every right to question why Tuchel continues to ignore him in favour of players who are operating at a lower level.

Tyrick Mitchell’s consistency is being ignored

Mitchell’s performance against Brighton is far from an outlier, and Palace fans have been seeing the left-back deliver on a regular basis since the arrival of Glasner, over 18 months ago now.

The 26-year-old’s consistency may actually be working against him in terms of an international call-up however, as his impressive games are simply the norm and he is just not highlighted as much as other English left-backs.

While his attacking play has improved this season, specifically the way he drives Palace up the pitch, Mitchell has not let his defensive numbers slip.

Tyrick Mitchell defensive stats Premier League 2025-26:

Mitchell has made the third most tackles per game (3.6) in the Premier League this season, behind only Joao Palhinha and Florentino Luis, who both play in the centre of midfield. The defender has also not made a single error leading to a goal so far this term, underlining his reliability.

Can Thomas Tuchel fit Tyrick Mitchell into his squad?

When you look at the most recent England squad, Djed Spence and Nico O’Reilly are in as the two left-backs. Burn can also play there if necessary, and provides cover in the centre of defence.

O’Reilly may have a higher ceiling than Mitchell, and on recent Premier League performances, could easily be the starting left-back at the World Cup next year. However, there is no reason why Mitchell can’t be trusted as a backup to the Manchester City man.

In the latter stages of any international competition, there will come a time when you are under huge pressure and need to be solid at the back. In that scenario, Mitchell would be the perfect player to bring off the bench for England, and his one-on-one defensive ability would be invaluable.

Tuchel has constantly reiterated the need to keep a settled squad, which may explain the omission of Mitchell, but in a position where England have struggled to find a long-term solution since the drop-off of Luke Shaw, you need to experiment.

Mitchell will continue to perform week in, week out for Crystal Palace, but it seems that Eagles fans are wasting their breath as they call for their man to be reintroduced at international level.
