Jayden Bogle ‘forced referee to book Blackburn star vs Leeds United’

Leeds United right-back Jayden Bogle pressured referee Lewis Smith into booking Blackburn Rovers captain Lewis Travis in the Whites’ 1-0 loss, according to Graham Smyth.

Daniel Farke’s side made the trip to Lancashire on Saturday afternoon (30th November), but found themselves trailing at half-time, thanks to a Todd Cantwell penalty, which proved to be the winner.

Shortly after the break though, the hosts were dealt a blow when Travis was booked, his fifth in the league this season, meaning he will now serve a one-match suspension.

That came after the midfielder produced an excellent tackle to shut down a Leeds counter attack down the right, putting the ball out for a throw in.

Having made that challenge, Travis then kicked the ball away to prevent the visitors from taking a quick throw, and was subsequently shown the yellow card.

Providing an update on the incident on X though, Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Smyth pointed out that the card was only produced after Bogle’s protestations, writing: “Referee books Travis for kicking the ball away. Didn’t look like he would until Bogle made the point forcefully.”

Lewis Travis can’t complain about his booking against Leeds United

In truth, Travis should not be too shocked that he picked up that booking for kicking the ball away in that incident.

We have seen all season that officials are becoming much stricter when it comes to dishing out bookings moments like this.

As a result, Travis was always taking a risk when he did kick the ball away here, and it is no surprise that Bogle protested as much as he did.

With Leeds trailing but needing the points for the promotion race, the right-back was always going to look for a booking for an opposition man.

He will of course, have been hoping for that to give his side a marginal extra advantage, by putting the pressure on a key opposition player by giving him a disciplinary tightrope to walk.

Given the way that other have themselves picked up yellow cards for appealing for others to be given to opponents this season, the Leeds man may also have been slightly lucky not to go into the book himself.

Ultimately the Whites dropped a big result at Ewood Park, with Junior Firpo at the other full-back spot singled out for criticism in the first half.
