Jeff Stelling outlines ‘scary’ Crystal Palace situation live on air

Crystal Palace could face a mass exodus next year as speculation grows on the futures of several key figures.

Football Insider revealed on Monday that Chelsea are planning to make a move for Marc Guehi, along with several other clubs.

The defender is expected to depart from Selhurst Park in the summer when his contract expires.

Oliver Glasner could also be set to leave Palace at the end of his contract in the summer, reports over the past few weeks have suggested.

It has been a difficult December, with Palace’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham on Sunday marking a fifth consecutive game without victory.

Jeff Stelling hints at several Crystal Palace departures

Palace still believe that they can convince Glasner to sign a new contract, but the Austrian appears to have one foot out of the door already.

The period since his arrival has been one of dreams for the Eagles, who have progressed massively on all fronts.

The likes of Ismaila Sarr, Guehi, Jean-Phillipe Mateta, and Adam Wharton have formed a sensational squad, capable of beating anyone on their day.

They proved exactly that when Palace beat Manchester City at Wembley Stadium to win the FA Cup in May, and they have continued to prove it this season, despite the key departure of Eberechi Eze.

The midfielder joined Arsenal in a big-money move in the summer, and Guehi came incredibly close to joining him out the door.

Jeff Stelling has now suggested that several more departures could follow, in what may well be a difficult period for the Eagles.

“You look at Palace,” he said, speaking to talkSPORT on Tuesday. “Adam Wharton is going to have admirers, Jean-Phillipe Mateta is going to have admirers, Daniel Munoz is going to have admirers.

“The next few months, the worst-case scenario for Palace supporters could be pretty scary.”

‘The best season in Crystal Palace’s history’ but what next?

Palace’s story looks set to be a repeat of what has been seen time and time again in the Premier League.

The team that has challenged the bigger clubs with great signings and good football, always gets pulled apart eventually when they cannot compete financially to retain their stars.

It has already happened with Eze and Michael Olise, it will certainly happen with Guehi, and Wharton, Munoz, Sarr and even Glasner may well follow.

Where Palace go next will be down to decision-makers at Selhurst Park, who face an extraordinary rebuilding operation should the worst-case scenario become reality.

Speaking after the defeat to Tottenham on Sunday, Glasner looked back on the last 18 months and told BBC Sport: “I think it was the best season in Crystal Palace’s history.

“It feels like we are not far away from being constantly in these areas. We are missing little things that are important to stay where we are.”
