Jermain Defoe tipped to dazzle for Sunderland after ex-teammate’s ‘massive’ dressing room claim
Paul Robinson has tipped Jermain Defoe to score “a hatful of goals” for Sunderland in the second half of the season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper said the 39-year-old’s addition was “very clever” after an “awful” few days on Wearside.
On Monday (31 January), the Black Cats confirmed the return of Defoe, 39, on an initial contract until the end of the season.
The centre-forward was a free agent after leaving Rangers at the beginning of January.
Robinson, who shared a dressing room with Defoe at Spurs and England, claimed his ex-teammate will have “a massive impact” on and off the field.
“Defoe is one of my signings of the window,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.
“There was not a good feeling around Sunderland after the result against Bolton, which of course led to Lee Johnson getting sacked. That performance was awful.
“The board have been very clever in signing Defoe because it’s averted attention and lifted the place.

“Sunderland are a gigantic football club and they need to get out of that league. For Jermain to finish his career at the Stadium of Light with promotion on his CV would be amazing. It would be a massive achievement for him.
“Jermain will have a massive impact both on and off the field in the dressing room. I know he’s 39 but the way he looks after himself, there is still goals in him. At that level he will score a hatful of goals if he’s given service.”
