Jesse Marsch: Pundit suggests ‘hidden’ clause in contract that ‘Leeds don’t want to advertise’

There may be a “hidden” relegation clause in Jesse Marsch’s contract that “Leeds don’t want to advertise”.

That’s according to former Whites stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the American’s appointment.

On Monday (28 February), Leeds announced the arrival of Marsch on a three-and-a-half-year contract.

Marsch had been out of work since December after RB Leipzig sacked him after just four months in charge.

Kenny was surprised by the length of the deal when Marsch was announced as Leeds’ new manager.

“The fact the contract is long-term is interesting,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“For me, that shows there is a commitment from both sides to stick with him but they could still go down.

“I haven’t seen anything reported about a relegation clause in the deal. What if he is terrible and takes them down?

“I’m sure that’s not the case and I hope it doesn’t happen but it’s not impossible.

“Maybe there is a clause in there for at the end of the season if both parties just think, ‘this isn’t working’.

“That would be the sensible thing to do, in my opinion, and I can see it being there. Does he want to manage in the Championship?

“I’m not sure he does if you look at his CV. Leeds wouldn’t want to advertise a clause like that for obvious reasons but maybe there is one hidden in there.”

Marsch’s first game as Whites boss comes against Leicester on Saturday (5 March).

The Whites sit two points and two places off the relegation zone.
