Jim White blasts ‘ridiculous’ Martin Keown over Postecoglou and Tottenham claim

Jim White lashed out at Martin Keown for being ridiculous” about Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou’s post-match interview.

Newcastle controversially beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 on Saturday (4 January) and the decision to award the Magpies’ first sparked a heated debate as Joelinton intercepted the ball with his hand in the build-up to the goal.

After the game, Sam Matterface interviewed Spurs’ manager Postecoglou and the Australian boss made a comment to suggest that the North London side would have won “on a fair and even playing ground”, while refusing to expand on what he meant.

Keown on talkSPORT (6 January), dissatisfied with the line of questioning that Matterface took, proposed that the Australian should have returned the question to the reporter to find out his opinion on the matter, to the outrage of White.

(11.54am) Keown said: “Well Postecoglou… he should have thrown it back to him and said ‘what do you think then? Do you honestly think that was a handball?'”

White: “That’s what he did do.”

Keown: “Well no he didn’t, he just went on a five minute rant didn’t he about how ‘if things were equal’.”

White: “He played it back into Sam’s court. Sam is there to get Postecoglou’s take on it.”

Keown: Yeh cause a journalist isn’t gonna get fined in front of the FA is he?” (For being critical about the refereeing decision)

White: “Martin don’t be ridiculous! Sam did his job and more, and put the point to Ange Postecoglou.”

Postecoglou safe as Tottenham boss for now

Football Insider opinion

In spite of a poor start to the season that see’s Spurs languishing in 12th place in the Premier League table, the former Celtic boss has kept the fans and board happy with his attacking style of football.

The North London club look set to back Postecoglou in the coming transfer window with plans to sign players in four different positions.

The purchasing spree seems to have already begun with the signing Antonin Kinsky, a goalkeeper from Salvia Prague.

They have also been linked with the signing of former Chelsea man, Fikayo Tomori who is now playing for AC Milan.

Postecoglou enjoyed significant praise when he first arrived from Celtic but has become increasingly irritable with lines of questioning across the media as progress has become more of a struggle.

There was more than enough incident in the defeat to Eddie Howe’s side to wind the manager up, with ex-PGMOL chief Keith Hackett indicating the visitors were lucky not to be reduced to 10 men, although he also suggested Spurs might have conceded a penalty under other circumstances.
