Joe Gelhardt may be set for bumper cash payout after Leeds United talks reveal – pundit
Joe Gelhardt may sign a new Leeds United contract worth £10,000-a-week, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker claimed a possible new Gelhardt deal may include a £7,000 bonus for every start.
The 20-year-old’s current terms expire in the summer of 2024 after he signed a four-year deal when moved from Wigan Athletic two years ago.
Sources told Football Insider last week (16 July) that he is now in advanced negotiations with Leeds over a new contract.
The Whites want to reward the England youth international after he enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2021-22.
He scored twice and provided a further four assists in 20 Premier League games, including five starts, as he played a key role in Leeds’ narrow escape from relegation.
Asked whether Gelhardt deserves a new contract, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “100 per cent.
“When you talk about contracts, he’s probably done what Carney Chukwuemeka needs to do [at Aston Villa].
“I can imagine his contract will be £10,000-a-week then £7,000 with every game he starts. This is what happens when you are at that age.
“In player’s contracts, you have incentives and rewards for starting games.
“If you do well and force your way into the side you get bonuses for starting.
“They need to keep him, 100 per cent, because he’s a very promising player.”

Gelhardt made his senior Leeds debut in the EFL Cup last season and now has 22 appearances across all competitions.
He played 21 times for Wigan before moving to the Yorkshire giants who took advantage of their financial situation.
