Joe Gomez could now force Liverpool exit after journalist’s update – pundit

Joe Gomez could force a move away from Liverpool this summer after “falling well down the pecking order”, according to Alan Hutton.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 24-year-old will want to play “as much as possible at this point in his career”.

As reported by The Athletic’s James Pearce on Monday (21 March), there are likely to be several offers tabled for out-of-favour defender Gomez this summer.

Hutton suggested the centre-back has been placed in a “tricky” situation.

“It’s difficult one for Gomez coming in,” he told Football Insider‘s Russell Edge.

“He’s a centre-half, it’s always going to be tricky to replicate what Trent Alexander-Arnold does for that Liverpool team.

“He’s still only 24, and of course, he will be wanting to play as much as possible at this point in his career.

“He has fallen well down the pecking order at Liverpool, especially after that serious injury he had.

“He may well be thinking that the time is right to move on and play at a high level. It could be time to assess his situation.”

The former Charlton man has just 15 appearances this term – but just one Premier League start.

Gomez has most frequently appeared in an unfamiliar right-back role this season.

The defender is out of contract in June 2024.

Gomez has made 136 appearances for Liverpool since joining the Merseysiders in 2015.

He has claimed 11 England caps during that time.
