Joe Gomez: Pundit ‘wowed’ as Tottenham well placed to sign Liverpool star after £23m update reported

Arsenal and Tottenham could fight it out to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez this summer.

That is according to ex-Leeds striker and club employee Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted clubs from across the Premier League and Europe will be keeping close tabs on the 24-year-old’s situation at Anfield.

The Daily Express reported on Wednesday (16 March) that Liverpool value the defender at around £23million.

The report claims while the eight-figure price might prove a stumbling block to suitors Fulham, Tottenham, West Ham and Newcastle United are all interested.

Whelan insisted the Premier League trio would not be the only ones in the hunt.

“£23million is not a lot of money to pay for quality centre-half like Joe Gomez,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“We’ve seen how dominant he can be for Liverpool. He’s got tough competition right now and he’s been out injured as well, which hasn’t helped.

“But I think when you’re looking at bolstering at the back, he’s somebody that knows the Premier League. He’s British, still young, £23million.

You’ll have a queue of people that would like his services. Starting from Arsenal, Tottenham, West Ham and all the way through the Premier League.

“To have somebody like him and that invaluable experience, he plays the game the right way. He’s been a football club that plays the right way and has that winning mentality.

“I think there will be a lot of interested parties to try and secure his services for £23million pounds. It’s not a lot of money to pay for a player that you’re going to get four to five of his best years out of.

“There will be certain teams across Europe looking and thinking: ‘£23million? Wow, absolutely. Why not? We’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.'”
